PFRA Announces 2010 Scholarship Recipients
Plano Fire Rescue Associates
started the PFRA Scholarship program back in 2003. Over the past seven
years, we have provided $20,000 in financial assistance to sons and
daughters of our Plano Fire Department employees who are college
bound. Scholarship amounts vary from year to year depending on
available funds. This year PFRA awarded three scholarships of
$1,000 each to these very deserving young ladies:
Jordan Amadon, daughter of Captain Jeff Amadon, will
be attending the University of Arkansas this autumn. She is
active in her church youth group. Jordan has received numerous
awards for academic excellence and is a member of the National Honor
Society. She participated in Track and Field events, was a member
of her school Volleyball Team, and served as her school Mascot
during her Junior year. Jordan has completed over 100 hours of
community service in addition to her part-time job. She has
received the Rotary Club awards for Academic Excellence during the past
3 years. She intends to major in Communication Science which will lead
to her ultimate goal to be a speech pathologist.
Victoria Banuelas, daughter of Paramedic Marco Banuelas,
will be attending UCLA in the fall. Victoria has a strong
academic history and has been the recipient of numerous awards
throughout her high school years. She received top Chemistry
Student Award, National Mathematics Award and is a member of the
National Honor Society to mention only a few. Victoria was very
active in community service, receiving the President's Volunteer
Service Award. She participated in Student Council, Speech and
Debate Team, School Improvement Team, Varsity Volleyball and Soccer
Teams and Teens in the Drivers Seat Program. In addition
she volunteered at the Cancer Treatment Institute and at Special
Olympics. She has already worked as a Reasearch Intern with the
College of Engineering at the University Of Texas at El Paso. This fall
will find Victoria pursuing a degree in biochemistry as a strpping
stone into medical school. Her ultimate goal is to participate in
the Doctor's Without Borders Program.
Katherine Schooling, daughter of Fire Apparatus
Operator Todd Schooling, will be attending the University of Texas at
Arlington this fall where she will major in Art History. After
earning her Bachelor's degree she plans to obtain a certification in
Interior Design. Katherine has joined a Freshman Interest
Group that will guarentee her a seat in the classes she will need
and provide her with peer support. She is a member of the
National Honor Society, the National Technical Honor Society, and
Math Honor Society. She has completed numerous AP classes and is
in the top 10 % of her graduating class. Trinity Baptist Youth
Group and the Trinity Baptist Choir are privileged to have Katherine's
participation. In addition to her school studies and activities,
plus her church involvement Katherine has worked several part-time jobs
during her high school years.
Special thanks goes to PFRA member Theresa Beckman and her entire
Scholarship Committee, who had the difficult task of selecting only
three recipients from the large number of highly qualified applicants.
PFRA would love to grow and expand our scholarship program and provide
even more financial assistance to all the sons and daughters of the
Plano Fire Department, but we need public's help. If a private
donor or company would like to sponsor a scholarship award within the
PFRA Scholarship program, please send an email to president@pfra.net.

Fire Chiefs Wash
The Engine At Station 6
When
PFRA
asked the C-shift personnel at Station 6 what they wanted for their
Station of the Month celebration, they said "we want the Chiefs at
Admin to come over and wash our engine and med unit while we sit around
and
eat ice cream". Well, PFRA was happy to help make their wish come
true!

Notice Chief Esparza and Chief Helm have toothbrushes for their
detailed work!
Very special thanks goes to all the Chiefs for participating with us
(and
having a great sense of humor!). PFRA wishes 6C the best of luck
when it comes time for the Chief's station inspections!

Your Grocery Purchases Benefit PFRA
Kroger,
Tom
Thumb, and Albertsons allow you to link your grocery "reward" card for
daily purchases to a non-profit
organization, and PFRA has qualified to participate with all three
businesses. To get started, click one of the icons below and
print out
their forms.
At Kroger, scan your
Kroger Plus Card, then ask the cashier to scan this form once. PFRA
will then be linked to your Plus Card until May 2010 (renew by
rescanning) |
For Tom
Thumb, complete
the form and take it to
their Customer Service Counter and
they will link it to your Tom Thumb Rewards Card. |
Albertsons no
longer uses a reward
card, but there is a card that you can swipe with your transaction that
will
benefit PFRA. Please send an email to Shelley Jones shelleyjo1@aol.com
or call 214-914-7644 and she will deliver or mail a card to you.
|
These
cards are
not restricted, so you can pass out this information to family and
friends. After you are enrolled in their programs, Tom Thumb,
Kroger
and Albertsons will each donate 1% of your store purchase to
PFRA. All
funds collected are used in our support of PFD.
